Studying English in LondonSpending time living in London is a great way to learn English, but it helps to have some expert tuition from one of London's many excellent English Language Schools that provide a wide choice of courses to suit all needs.  Whether you need to learn Business English or just brush up on your conversational skills, there are expert teachers ready to help you.

When choosing a Language School and Course there are a number of things to consider, and different schools may specialise in different areas.  Will you be learning full time, or do you need to fit your courses around your work schedule?  Will you need accommodation, and do you want to experience life in different parts of the UK?  What sort of social activities would you like to participate in with your course, and would you like to be introduced to local families?

The British Council

The British council was founded in 1934 and is a leading organisation in English language education.  They work with language schools to set high standards of education, so look for the “Accredited by the British Council” mark when choosing a school.  The graphic to the right is the British Council accreditation mark. Please note: we are not accredited by the British Council. We put this here to show you what to look for when finding a language school.

We recommend the following schools:

College of North West London

The London School of English

EJO (Elizabeth Johnson Organisation)

Eden House College

Crest Schools of English

ELT - English Language Training

English Qualifications

If you want to study at a college or university in the UK they will usually ask you for proof that your English has met a certain standard.  Commonly accepted qualifications include: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), GCSE or IGCSE English,  Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), Cambridge English Language 1119.  If you intend to go on to study or look for a job always check in advance what qualifications and grades are accepted as proof of your English ability as different universities/colleges/employers will have different requirements.

Why not come along to one of our ex-pat events.  Each month we meet at Bar & Co on a boat on the river Thames.  There you can meet other expats who have just arrived in London and also meet with people who have lived in London for some time.  We have a few drinks, meet some nice people and generally have a good time.

there is a new free course in basic English available in London. A new class starts weekly, so there are plenty of opportunities to join. The course is free, as it is supported by the government.

Have a look at http://www.basic-english-skills.com/ for more details.
