HOW TO GET A DEAL

It is very hard to get a telephone deal unless you have proof of residence: through a utility bill and a bank account. They want reliable people so most companies go out of their way to make it difficult for you to do business with them. Some are more flexible but usually, it is easier to get a pre-pay (top up type of cards) plan first and then move onto a monthly deal.

There is a huge battle to gain new customers so usually you can be choosey and look for what suits you better and negotiate for discounts or extras. In the shops you can get to talk with the sales staff and tell them to give you their best. Compare and decide.

There are sites that represent all mobile networks and usually they are the best agents to get better deals. Companies like the Carphonewharehouse or Dial-a-phone are the most famous ones. You need to make sure they have branches on the street in case you have trouble, so that you can go and make claims.. dealing online can be hard work and companies tend to be evasive.

If you type in calling cards into Google you will find a huge range of people that offer cheap calling cards. Using these you can make phone calls to foreign counties for a fraction of the cost of using existing network operators.

Calling cards

The quality of some calls can be a bit off. You get what you pay for I guess. But most companies offer quite reasonable rates. a LOT CHEAPER than the phone networks. You usually have to phone a special number, then enter your pin. This allows you to type in the phone number you want to call. You can typically get a £5 phone card that allows you to talk for an hour.

It rocks!
Or you can get an account

Another good option is to get an account with a company like Alpha Telecom. Whereby you call a number (0800 or 0207) and enter your pin and you can talk forever for nothing. The advantage is that you can top it up without having to go to a shop for a new card...
DialTru

I use DialTru for my international calls. Their published rates may not seem as attractive as utopian calling card rates but they do not apply any hidden charges and their call quality is very high and stable hence you get a better value than a calling card.
They have a very neat and safe payment system. You dial their IVR number choose £3 or £5 credit option and this amount is transfered from your mobile credit to DialTru credit 24/7. You receive text to confirm the transaction and giving you access and customer services numbers. Simple - you don't need to shop for a calling card, give your bank/credit card details to a company you have never heard before or dial a long PIN. You can only use this service through a UK 3,O2, orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile SIMs and get all the benefits of staying with these main operators. If you are on a pay monthly contract with them you also pay monthly for DialTru. Check their site for details;
